Brownfields
The Buffalo Niagara River Land Trust actively seeks out waterfront brownfield sites to clean, restore, and protect them to keep them in trust—ensuring safe, public access for generations to come.
“Brownfields” are abandoned, idled, or underutilized properties where actual or potential contamination hinders redevelopment. These sites are often unsafe for recreation, from walking to fishing, and can pose serious risks to both people and the environment.
Western New York has a significant number of brownfield sites due to its manufacturing and industrial history, particularly along waterfronts and rail corridors. Left unaddressed, they threaten community health, depress property values, and limit economic opportunities.
Remediating these sites brings far-reaching benefits—revitalizing the environment, restoring community pride, and creating new opportunities for economic and social growth.
Through its work, BNRLT is building healthier, more connected, and more vibrant communities.
